Agriculture remains the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, employing millions and serving as the foundation of food security. Yet, despite its potential, productivity continues to lag due to heavy reliance on manual labor and outdated tools. For decades, agricultural mechanization—ranging from simple equipment to advanced machinery—has been recognized as the key to transforming Nigeria’s food systems.

Unfortunately, Nigeria’s mechanization ecosystem remains fragmented and underfunded. Tractor density falls far below global standards, while smallholder farmers, who produce over 70% of the nation’s food, face persistent challenges: limited access to finance, weak infrastructure, and a lack of technical capacity. Although various public and private initiatives exist, they often operate in silos—making impact difficult to scale.

With growing global focus on food systems transformation, climate-smart agriculture, and private sector–driven innovation, Nigeria is at a crossroads. To unlock agricultural potential and strengthen food security, it is critical to realign the nation’s mechanization strategy.
